Surgery on Monday, now feel sore and empty.

I had my RNY on Monday afternoon at Centennial by Dr. Houston and felt great while in the hospital.  Now I feel hungry, or empty.  I can't really decide exactly.  I keep sipping on sugar free Kool Aid and water, adding in lots of variety with chicken and beef broth, jello in lots of flavors (all sugar free).  Am I really feeling light headed and hungry or is this from surgery?  I am having a HUGE problem getting my protein shake in and will be going tomorrow to try another kind (fuzzy navel is not doing it for me!).  My belly is huge, bloated and tight.  I have walked my booty off and had a fair amount of gas...I don't think it's all air in there.  Tell me what is normal, Please!  I may be on the verge of a spas out!

It is normal to be bloated after surgery. I was told it was going to happen because of the gas and scare tissue from the surgery. In a few weeks it will pass. Jus****ch your incision sites. Mine became swolen and hard with a fever and I had puss infection that had to be drained. But I am now about 45 days out and I am NEVER hungry. It is strange. Just make sure you are getting what you need.  I was very light headed and I had a hard time getting my eyes to focus for about 2 weeks, the doc told me it was anesthisia and my body chimicals trying to settle. It will pass. You will make it.

Congrats on your surgery.

Hi Cheryl....don't spaz out...lol...although it is easy to do.  I swore that the morning after I had surgery I woke up hungry.  In fact, I told Dr. Houston that when he came in to visit me and he looked at me like I had six heads...lol....but, I did feel a little hungry...I dunno why.  I can say that I am six weeks out now (just had my 6 week w/Dr. H today!)....and I never feel hungry....getting my protein in & my water (plus the supplements) is so filling....so, the "hunger" will pass.

I liked the Fuzzy Navel before surgery, but OMGoodness...the first time I tried it after surgery I thought I was going to vomit.  It was horrible...of course, EVERYTHING was bad right after surgery.  Just when I thought I liked chicken broth it would disgust me...then I'd try beef broth, but the next day...yuk.  My tastes changed so frequently.....and getting my protein in was so difficult for a week or two...but, you will be able to get it in.  I love the AMP chocolate protein from GNC...it tastes really great & is really easy...I ran it by Pam (the RD at Centennial) and she said it was appropriate for me.  You might want to ask about that.

The gas was absolutely crazy for me. I had no idea that it was going to be so loud & so strangely uncomfortable....but, it will subside, I promise!  For me it was the 4 week point when everything really came together...no problems getting all protein in, all fluid, all supplements & exercise.....so, give yourself a break....just don't get dehydrated & work on that protein...and...call Dr. Houston's office if you have any concerns...they are so wonderful....

Hang in there....pretty soon you will look back on surgery & think it was SO SO worth it!!  xo, Micheala.

Try a scrambled egg or some re fried beans watered down with some broth.  Those two helped me get through the first few days.  My Dr. had us eating pureed food before she would let us leave the hospital.  I don't advocate doing anything other than what your Dr says, but perhaps you could call them and ask if you can have something more solid if your stomach will tolerate it.

I had the gas problem but after two weeks, it had pretty much gone.  I felt like the turning point for me was when I had the staples taken out after 2 weeks.  It was better each day after that.  I feel great.  Had RNY Feb 9th.

You might try some unflavored protein in yogurt or cottage cheese if you can't get the shakes down.

I'm not sure there is a normal.  Everyone seems to be a little different.  What one can tolerate another can't.  I still don't care for Fuzzy Navel after surgery.  I just can't get it right.  Although I have found a killer combination for chocolate.

I use 1 or 2 scoops of Chocolate (I use Isopure or Isopuke as Mel calls it.
a sprinkle of unsweetened coco
I dump a little RTD Oh Yeah Choclote In it
Add a couple of pumps of Devinci Kahlua or Caramel (whichever suits me at the time)
A little water and a few cubes of Ice
Mix it all in a magic bullet (put some splenda in it if its not sweet enough for you)
You can see the whole process is not  scientific.  It tastes like a Baskin Robins shake to me.  Absolute Food Porn!    The next person might hate it.  Who knows.  It's trial and error.

Hope you figure it out and get comfortable with it soon.  It will be just fine.

Cheryl,

I didn't have RNY, I have a RealizeBand, but like Ronda, I just wanted to say, I hope things get better for you soon.  And it sounds like you are getting some great advice from the RNY'ers.

Take care!

Thanks, everybody for the suggestions and kind words.  I finally broke down and went back to the vitamin shoppe (I love those guys!) and they had the following reply--bring back the fuzzy navel for a refund or store credit (opened and all!!) and try this whey protein in what looks like a test tube.  It is new-whey liquid protein and has 42 grams of protein in 3.1 ounces of liquid.  No sugar, no fat, 2 carbs, 176 calories.  I figure I can drink 3.1 ounces of ANYTHING for those stats.  It was a close one, girls.   I gagged and danced all over my kitchen, swearing that someone had mashed up dirt with orange jello and sold it to me!  But I got it down...all 42 grams of protein!  I feel much better, not so light headed and "weird" feeling anymore.  Thanks sooooooooooo much!

I also had RNY surgery with Dr. Houston on April 20th. About to hit my two week anniversary! LOL

I hated being on Stage 1 and Stage 2. I was full/sore and really wasn't interested in sipping liquids. However, those Sugar Free popsicles went down the easiest for me. I also like the Muscle Milk LITE - coffee and chocolate mint flavors.

I've since moved to soft foods - eggs, yogurt, blended chicken/egg/tuna salad and I'm doing fine.

I know it's tough to get your liquid and proteins in, but do a little at a time. It's adds up over the course of the day. Also, someone suggested to me using a shot glass to get in your liquids.

Good luck!
